‘Dying’ to STOP Smoking? Stop Smoking Aids Could Be Your Lifeline
By Smoke Free on May 2, 2008 in Stop Smoking Aids
There are ’stop smoking’ aids advertising pinned up in almost every department or large chain store and pharmacy areas are pasting them everywhere. It seems as though every brand name has its own aid and many stores have every brand stacked together creating lists and lists of choices.
From nicotine gum to lozenges to even patches, there has become a wide variety of aids, in abundance, to help people stop smoking. Depending on the amount of smoking a person does, there are different aids with different levels to help a person step down from the different nicotine levels until quitting is easier.
The Usual Suspects
1. Nicotine Gum
This gum was the first stop smoking aid to be marketed. For many heavy smokers, the higher volume gum is needed to help curb the real, hard attacks that come from nicotine. These gums are subsequently produced in both two milligram doses and four milligram doses, the latter being used for smokers that need that extra kick in the right direction. Once the big ones are under control, they will drop down to the two milligram gums and slowly wean themselves from the grip of a nicotine addiction. Generally, all brands work on the same basis and the differences among the store and name brands are normally things such as flavour, and so depend on individual preferences.
2. Lozenges
Instead of chewing, the lozenges are meant to be sucked on like a lifesaver candy and will be a real lifesaver. Some people prefer the lozenges over the gum because chewing in a meeting or when speaking to a crowd is bad manners. They can go on with their day without worrying about others. The lozenges also come in different brands and different flavours.
And lastly……
3. The Patch
Having the patch can produce results and can be used day to day without realising that nicotine cravings are slowly being drawn from the body. For some people, a busy day gives them no time to stop and look for gum or lozenges and may produce extra concern when dealing with clients all day. The patch stays on all day and and can be forgotten about for convenience and used as a stress free aid. The patches work in the same way as the other medicines used as stop smoking aids and is also considered very effective. It depends on each individual to decide which aid is the best for them.
For those people who have a nicotine addiction to smokeless tobacco, all of these stop smoking aids will also work. Many people who use smokeless tobacco find that the nicotine gum works the best. The gum can be chewed and then be put in between the cheek and gum for the feel of the tobacco.
Dont feel dispondent if one aid does not work. Whichever aid you choose, if it doesn’t help then it is okay to try another method. Many smokers trying to quit use numerous aids that work best in certain situations. Take time to experiment and find an aid that draws you closer to your goal.
The main objective to keep in mind is that one can stop smoking and the goal can be achieved with a little perseverence.
